Desperate Rafael Benitez reportedly ready to gamble on terrific but injury-prone England international duo

Following a dismal start to life back in Premier League, Newcastle are willing to sign just any type of topflight players they can get their hands on, and the Sun claims manager Rafa Benitez has eyes on West Ham striker Andy Carroll and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

Apart from being (former) England internationals, the only other thing the duo has in common is their frequent injury nightmares.

Back to back league losses to Tottenham and Huddersfield Town will only further force Benitez into becoming more desperate to sign the duo, regardless of their frequent visits to the treatment table.

Neither of the two has been named in their club’s matchday squads this term, but the quality they are capable of bringing to the table when fit cannot be questioned.

Carroll, 28, left Newcastle in 2011, but has since struggled to play a full season.

The closest Wilshere, 25, has gotten to seeing action for a full campaign was in 2010-11, when he made 35 league appearances for the Gunners and emerging as PFA Young Player of the Year.

With Newcastle lacking some creativity in the middle of the pack and finding it hard to score, the two Englishmen would represent dream signings.

If only they can be fit.

The Toons wish to retain their Premier League status at the end of the campaign, and the duo can help them achieve just that.
