Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has claimed contract rebel Emre Can won’t be leaving Anfield this summer amidst strong links with a Juventus switch.
The current contract of the 23-year-old Germany international ticks down into a final year and the rumours of a Turin move have been turned up a notch in recent weeks.
Can and Liverpool have failed to reach an agreement as per the player’s future, but Klopp believes there might still be a headway despite the fact that the midfielder could become a free agent next summer.
Ahead of ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League play-off clash with Hoffenheim, the German manager claimed: “So far there is no signing and that is the situation.
“We are still in talks. Do I think it is too cool that we didn’t fix it so far? No, to be honest. But it is all okay at the moment and we have to take it like this.
“His mind is not elsewhere. It is an important contract for him at his age. I am 100% sure that we don’t sell the player now in this situation. Not a player from the first team line-up for sure.
“He will play here for the next year that is for sure. All the rest we have to see.”
Can has been involved in every minute of Liverpool’s first 2 games of the new season, assisting at weekend in the 3-3 draw against Watford, while also helping the team to a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim.
From the look of things, the former Bayern Munich man could be set to play a big part in the club’s campaign this term, but that will depend on what happens at the end of the transfer window.
Liverpool are hoping to add another midfielder to their ranks before deadline day, but might be left with no option than make Can a frequent name on their starting XI if none is eventually signed.
If he’s involved in more games this season, there could still be a change in mind as per his signing a contract. While an exit also cannot be ruled out yet until the window shuts.
