Wayne Rooney has said that scoring the winning goal during Everton’s 1-0 win over Stoke City on Saturday was a “special moment”.

The 31-year-old Rooney headed home his 199th Premier League goal after being set up by youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Following the match, Rooney said, “On a personal note, I’m absolutely delighted to score the winning goal at Goodison Park. It was a special moment for me. There was a lot of relief and a lot of emotion. It was an important goal just before half-time.

“I’ve felt at home since I first stepped in the training ground. I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time.”

Rooney joined Everton from Manchester United this summer after a successful 13 year spell with the Red Devils during which he become the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

He will hope to revitalize his career with the Toffees whom he left to join United as a highly rated teenager 13 years ago.
