According to the Liverpool Echo, Catalan-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports that Everton have commenced talks with Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen over a potential move to the Goodison Park this summer.
However, the Blues want to be assured his injury woes won’t continue at Merseyside, and will only make an official bid to the Spanish giants once he shakes off his current knock.
In no small part to frequent visits to the treatment table, Vermaelen has only been able to feature for Barca on 21 occasions since arriving from Arsenal in 2014.
Manager Ronald Koeman wants to sign a left centre-back before the transfer window shuts, and is monitoring the situation of the Belgium international.
While a move for the 31-year-old West Brom-target seems like one Everton should totally steer clear of, Vermaelen would indeed be a great defensive cover if he’s able to conquer his injury demons.
With over 150 appearances for the Gunners, he has the quality experience needed to play at a side like Everton, and for a cut-price deal, he could be worth taking a chance on.
On a lighter note, Vermaelen could also help keep the physio in a job.
