Paul Merson has revealed that he feels that Newcastle United will narrowly avoid relegation during the upcoming Premier League campaign.
The former Arsenal man believes that the Tyneside club should have at least signed two £30 million players as they look to build a team that is competitive in the Premier League.
Merson has predicted that the Magpies will finish in 17th position which is just one place above the relegation zone while he thinks that Brighton and Hove Albion, Huddersfield and Watford will be relegated.
Merson said of Newcastle, “They won’t be happy with this, but they haven’t really recruited yet. I worry for them, and I think the fans will keep them up. This is a Championship team, and they haven’t really added much top-flight quality.
“They get 50,000 every week, they have Rafa Benitez as manager, go out and sign two £30m players! They haven’t done that, and I think they’re cutting corners. I worry about Benitez getting frustrated.”
Rafa Benitez has admitted that this summer has been frustrating for him in terms of landing targets and some have predicted that this could result in the club having a difficult season.
