England manager Gareth Southgate has said that Wayne Rooney can earn a recall to the Three Lions now that he is plying his trade with Everton.
The 31-year old-Rooney has not been called up to the England team since Southgate was appointed manager due to a lack of playing time with former club United.
A major reason why the England and United all-time leading goal scorer Rooney returned to his boyhood club was arguably to improve his chances of making it into the Three Lions squad for the 2018 World Cup.
Southgate has now not ruled out the possibility of a recall for the player and said, “The great thing for Rooney is that he will probably be playing more regular football and so it’s as simple as that. In the league we only have 70 English players, and so we certainly aren’t ruling anybody out. He’s absolutely [in my thinking].”
Rooney will also know that next year may present the final opportunity that he gets to play at a World Cup due to his advancing age.
