The much anticipated Apertura 2017 of the Liga MX has finally arrived, and this Friday, July 21, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific) Xolos of Tijuana will host Cruz Azul at the Estadio Caliente. This match will be one of the most noteworthy during Week 1 play, as both sides made a great deal of new signings and are good playoff contenders from the get-go.
Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente sold four important players during the early stages of the transfer season which caused some disappointment with the fans. Fan favorites Aviles Hurtado, Guido Rodriguez, Carlos Vargas, and Milton Caraglio were all sold, yet, management was able to sign eight new high calibers like Gustavo Bou, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, Enzo Kalinski, Luis Angel Mendoza, Damian Musto, Martin Cuero, Alejandro Donatti, and Matias Aguirregaray.
On the bench, Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera who led the team to consecutive first place finishes on the regular standings opted to return to his beloved Club America which allowed Xolos to hire Argentine Eduardo ‘Chacho’ Coudet. Therefore, Friday’s Club Tijuana will be a revolutionized team with a lot of new weapons which will look to begin the season on a good note with a home win against a difficult team like Cruz Azul.
The ‘cementeros’ had another frustrating campaign last season, where they missed the playoffs even under the helm of coach Paco Jemez. Cruz Azul’s management decided to let the Spaniard remain with the team under the hope that the squad will once again become dominant and reach the playoffs. While players like Joao Rojas and Jorge Benitez were transferred away, important signings were made for Jordan Silva, Gerardo Flores, Edgar Mendez, Alejandro Faurlin, and Felipe Flores.
