This Wednesday, July 19, 2017 (3:00 PM Pacific) Costa Rica will play Panama at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The match will be part of the quarterfinals of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup and should be an exciting encounter.
Costa Rica was one of the best teams in the group stages of the tournament and is one of the favorites to take the Gold Cup trophy. Los Ticos topped Group A with seven points and a goal differential of four, finishing ahead of Canada, Honduras and French Guiana. Costa Rica started the competition with a slim 1-0 win against Honduras, then tied 1-1 against Canada and finished off the group stage play with a 3-0 win against French Guiana.
Manager, Oscar Ramirez counted with five different goal scorers throughout the group stage, showcasing a tremendous team effort. Costa Rica should get to at least the semifinals of the competition as it is one of the strongest sides in the CONCACAF region.
Panama had a very strong showing in the group stage of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, finishing second in Group B with seven points, just trailing behind the United States in total goals for that first-place spot. The Central American side started with a surprising 1-1 draw against the United States, then had a predictable 2-1 win against Nicaragua and finally had a convincing 3-0 victory against Martinique.
Panama’s top scorer during the group stage portion of the Gold Cup was Gabriel Torres of Swiss side, Laussane-Sport, who scored two goals. Manager, Hernan Dario Gomez is in charge of a very young core as 14 players on the roster are 25 years old or younger. Panama has an intriguing team and should put up a great fight in this game making for a spectacular clash.
