This Tuesday, July 18, 2017 (10:00 AM Pacific) Olympique Marseille will host Sporting CP at the Orange Velodrome for a friendly match. Both teams had underwhelming 16-17 campaigns and will look to improve this season.
Olympique Marseille, finished fifth in the Ligue 1 and missed out on Champions League football for this upcoming season. The Phocians still had some breakout players throughout the season that demonstrated the potential this squad does have, those players include Morgan Sanson, Florian Thauvin and Maxime Lopez. The Phocians did have some huge departures this offseason in club captain and top scorer, Bafetimbi Gomis and veteran midfielder, Lassana Diarra but have already made some nice signings to replace the pair.
The Brazilian defensive midfielder, Luiz Gustavo was brought in from Wolfsburg as well as the French striker, Valere Germain from AS Monaco. A couple of loan spells are also up in Lucas Ocampos and Steve Mandanda, who will also help solidify the club. It will be interesting to see if any of the fresh signings get to play in this game and how they fare against a solid opposition.
Sporting CP finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, behind Porto and Benfica and will be looking to fight for the title more competitively this season. The Portuguese club has already made some important signings this offseason like Fabio Coentrao and Seydou Doumbia coming in on loan and the recent addition of former Barcelona defender, Jeremy Mathieu. Argentine winger, Marcos Acuna is also set to join Sporting, coming over from Racing Club in Argentina, which will improve the already potent attack.
These signings with the talented core of Lisbon’s team with players like Rui Patricio, William Carvalho, Bas Dost and Gelson Martins should make Sporting a force in this game and in this upcoming season. The match should be a hard-fought encounter and showcase excitement throughout the 90 minutes between two very talented sides.
