This Sunday, July 16, 2017 (5:30 PM Pacific) Mexico will play Curacao at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas for a group stage match in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Curacao is already mathematically eliminated from the competition but Mexico will need a favorable result from the game.
Mexico has had a bipolar start to the competition, starting with a dominant 3-1 win against El Salvador but then following that up with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Jamaica. El Tri looked lackluster in the encounter against Jamaica and had very few scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Juan Carlos Osorio has not gone over the top with the rotations so far, with only four changes in the starting 11 from the first game to the second game. One of the more impressive players so far has been Tigres’ defender, Hugo Ayala, who has been a rock in the heart of the defense, sporting the captain’s armband.
Another player that has stood out has been Orbelin Pineda, who has controlled the midfield beautifully and created several scoring opportunities. All striker options have been unimpressive so far with Martin Barragan, Erick Torres and Angel Sepulveda yet to contribute with any goals and not providing much offensively. Despite these problems, Mexico should come out on top in this game against Curacao and move past this group stage.
Curacao has proven to be one of the weakest sides in this edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Caribbean side started its campaign with a 2-0 loss against Jamaica and then stayed consistent and lost 2-0 against El Salvador. Mexico was able to dominate El Salvador and should be able to do the same against Curacao here. The island nation does have some talented players like Leandro Bacuna from Aston Villa but should not be able to cause many problems in this match. The match should be interesting and have plenty of goals for El Tri.
