This Friday, July 7, 2017 (6:00 PM Pacific) Honduras will play Costa Rica at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey for a 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup match. Both teams are strong candidates to take the title and will be looking for the three points from the encounter.
Honduras is one of the more rigid teams in this competition and will be battling for the top spot in Group A of the tournament. Most of Los Catrachos do play domestically in Honduras but some of the more talented players reside in the MLS and Europe. The key MLS players on the Central American team include Maynor Figueroa of FC Dallas and Boniek Garcia, Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis, who all play on the Houston Dynamo. One of the more exciting players on this Honduras squad is the young forward, Anthony Lozano, who is set to join Barcelona. Honduras should face a potent opponent in Costa Rica and will need to fight for the three points.
Costa Rica along with Mexico and the United States is one of the heavy favorites to take the Gold Cup trophy. Los Ticos have emerged in the CONCACAF region in the last few years and will enter this tournament with a very solid squad with several players who militate in Europe and the MLS. Oscar Ramirez will be without the best goalkeeper in the region, Keylor Navas and without Deportivo La Coruna midfielder, Celso Borges who is also a very talented player.
Ramirez has decided to give the pair of La Liga players a break from the national team which is a crucial decision that may haunt the team. There are still some heavy guns from Europe on the team like Giancarlo Gonzalez of Serie A side, Bologna, Cristian Gamboa of Celtic, Joel Campell of Arsenal and Bryan Ruiz of Sporting CP. This core of Europeos is a rigid base and fare very well in international competitions for Costa Rica. The match should be a thrilling one to kick off the Gold Cup competition this Friday.
