Joey Barton has said that Rangers Europa League loss to Progres Niederkorn may be the ‘worst result in British footballing history in Europe’ but added that the Gers can redeem themselves should they manage to finish above their traditional rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership next season.
Barton admitted that this is a dark period of history for his former club but remains confident that all is not lost and that they can still have a productive and successful season next term.
He said, “You can understand the frustration of the Rangers fans. They have been to the depths of Scottish football and they are on the way back up.
“They are climbing back up that mountain and along the way there is going to be setbacks. It is not always going to go in a kind of fairytale way. If Rangers finish above Celtic this season, no one will care about what happened in the Europa League.”
The loss of Rangers to the minnows from Luxembourg proves that they still need to do a lot more developments if they wish to re-establish themselves as a dominant force within Scottish football.
