This Sunday, June 11, 2017 (9:00 AM Pacific) the Republic of Ireland will host Austria at the Aviva Stadium for a UEFA 2018 World Cup qualifying match. Both teams are in the contested Group D of the competition and will be looking for the three points from the encounter.
The Republic of Ireland is excelling in this qualifying stage, currently in second in Group D with 11 points. The Green Army is undefeated in these qualifiers with three wins and two draws, this includes a 0-0 draw to Wales in their latest fixture in the qualifiers. Before that draw to Wales, Ireland also had a 1-0 win against Austria away from home and should be able to do the same here at home. Austria does count with talented players but Ireland does have the stronger overall squad with almost all the players on the squad playing for English clubs. Only one player on the Irish squad, Jonny Hayes of Scottish club, Aberdeen does not play in England. Some standouts to look out for may be Robbie Brady, Harry Arter and Jonathan Walters who all play in the Premier League. The match should be interesting and a close call even with Ireland having the slight edge.
Austria is also doing well in the qualifiers, currently in fourth with seven points in Group D od the competition. Das Team does have two losses in the qualifying stage, one being a 3-2 loss to Group D leaders, Serbia and the other being a 1-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland. Marcel Koller does count with a talented squad with most of the players playing in the German Bundesliga, the standout is, of course, David Alaba of Bayern Munich. Some other intriguing players include Julian Baumgartlinger, Martin Harnik and Zlatko Junuzovic. The match should be a contested duel between two teams with a plethora of talent and should provide an exciting clash.
