Former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has said that the Bhoys have what it takes to emulate the class of 2003 and reach a European Cup final.

Former CSKA Sofia and Aston Villa midfielder Petrov was part of the Celtic team that completed a domestic clean sweep during the 2000-01 season and which also played in the UEFA Cup final two years, later eventually losing 3-2 to Porto after extra time.

The Bhoys have failed to impress in European football over recent years, which has led many to question the standard of Scottish Football. During the Champions League this season, the Bhoys came last in their group which featured Barcelona and Manchester City, failing to win a single match.

However Petrov is adamant that if the club gives Brendan Rodgers a chance to focus on building the team, they can one day reach a European Cup final again.

The 37-year-old Petrov said of the Bhoys’ chances of reaching a European final, “If they progress the way they are progressing, maybe one day. But, if he (Rodgers) wants to achieve a European final I think he needs to add on (players). He knows that. “
