Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho explained why his team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham at White Heart Lane on Sunday.
“When people say we gambled by going to Europa League, we didn’t gamble. You can’t play two big competitions with 15 players. It was compulsory”, said Mourinho of his decision to prioritize the Europa League.
Mourinho prioritized the Europa League and his side that were defeated by Spurs included eight changes. The Red Devils are now out of the race to finish in the top four and will need to win the Europa League, should they wish to play in the Champions League next season.
Spurs won the match through goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane. Veteran Wayne Rooney managed to pull one back for United but they failed to draw level.
Fans are bound to be divided over the way in which Mourinho opted to approach this game.
