In the quarterfinals of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Tigres UANL will host Monterrey at the Estadio Universitario this Wednesday, May 10, 2017 (5:30 PM Pacific). This will be the first leg of the match-up and is set to be one of the best encounters in the Liga MX Playoffs.
The current champions had an irregular Clausura 2017 tournament, barely making the playoffs coming in seventh place with 25 points. Tigres UANL defeated Queretaro 5-1 away from home to make the playoffs in the final week of the competition. Ricardo Ferretti’s men finished hot, winning their last two games and outscoring their opponents 8-1 in the process. The Felines also finished with the best defense in the Liga MX, only conceding 12 goals throughout the Clausura.
Andre-Pierre Gignac once again finished as one of the top players in Mexico with eight goals in the campaign. Three of the eight goals came in the last game of the regular season against Queretaro so the French Striker will be in top form for this game. Even with the uncharacteristic regular season that Tigres had, Los Felinos are still one of the favorites to take the league title. Ricardo Ferretti will be facing a very tough opposition and will need to utilize the home-field advantage in this game to get the win.
Monterrey was one of the best teams in this tournament, finishing in second place with 27 points. Los Rayados had a very poor ending to their Clausura campaign losing two games to relegation candidates. Monterrey lost 1-0 away from home against Veracruz in week 16 of the Clausura and fell 2-1 against Monarcas Morelia in the final week of the competition. Los Regios will be going into this game with a lack of momentum which could affect the team.
Monterrey did defeat Tigres UANL the first time the two met in this tournament. The Clasico Regio was played at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer and the home team came away with the 1-0 victory. Antonio Mohamed will be looking for a similar result and just like in that game will be looking to form a rigid defense that will contain Tigres’ deadly attack. The match should be a thrilling encounter between two masterminds in Ricardo Ferretti and Antonio Mohamed and a clash between two of the best teams in Mexico.
