Everton are reportedly closing in on a £17 million deal to lure Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, per The Northern Echo. Despite the Black Cats being relegated this season, Pickford has excelled with his performances and been called up to the England national team by Gareth Southgate, though he has yet to make his debut for the Three Lions.
Since the departure of former long-serving goalkeeper Tim Howard, the Toffee’s have failed to find a suitable first choice goalkeeper. Maarten Stekelenberg and Joel Robles were handed opportunities this season, but failed to convince that they are capable of holding down the spot.
Though Pickford will be reluctant to leave the Black Cats, as he has spent his entire career with the club, he will have to do so if he wishes to go on and establish himself as one of the premier goalkeepers in English football.
Considering that David Moyes’ side are not doing well financially, the £17 million which they gain from the sale of the 23 year old will be a good cash injection.
