In the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final, Tigre UANL will host Pachuca at the Estadio Universitario this Tuesday, April 18, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). Both teams have very strong sides and have excelled in this competition and in the Liga MX which should make for an amazing match.
Tigres UANL is back to being the powerhouse it should be, currently in ninth place with 19 points in the Liga MX Clausura 2017. The felines are just a point out of a playoff spot now and are coming from two consecutive victories against Chivas and Pumas UNAM. Tigres did not only defeat Chivas and Pumas but was dominant in its victories, not conceding any goals and putting seven goals past its opposition in those two games. Andre-Pierre Gignac has had a resurgence lately after a quiet start to the Liga MX tournament scoring three goals in his last two league games.
The French striker also scored a goal in the CCL semi-final match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Ricardo Ferretti will have a reliance on his strong offense but also counts with the best defense in the Liga MX. The team from Nuevo Leon has conceded a league-leading 10 goals in 14 weeks of play. Tigres UANL needs to take advantage of playing at home for this first-leg and get some goals past Pachuca.
Pachuca has not been spectacular as of late in the Liga MX, currently in eighth place with 20 points. The ‘tuzos’ have struggled massively to score, getting shutout in their last five league games. Pachuca has only scored 11 goals this Clausura, tied for the lowest total with Veracruz. The team from Hidalgo has looked sharp in the CCL, defeating FC Dallas by an aggregate score of 4-3 in the semifinals and Saprissa by an aggregate score of 4-0.
Franco Jara and Hirving Lozano have been the main contributors in the Concachampions playoffs scoring three goals each. Diego Alonso’s offense cannot be as dormant as it has been recently in the Liga MX to get a favorable result from this match. This first-leg can prove to be decisive as Tigres can prove to be a massive threat at the Estadio Universitario. The game should be one of the best and more intense encounters between Liga MX teams this week.
