Ex-Striker hails Leeds United star for ‘immense’ display against Newcastle

Football pundit Noel Whelan said on BBC Sport that the performance of Pontus Jansson was immense as the Whites claimed a 1-1 draw with Championship title contenders Newcastle despite having been dominated for much of the game at St James Park.

The former Leeds striker said, “Jansson was my Man of the Match – he threw his body in front of all kinds of shots. It was a great battle between him and Mitrovic, and he was involved in the equaliser.”

For Newcastle, the result will be disappointing as it sees them move four points adrift of Championship leaders Brighton and Hove Albion. Were it not for Jansson as well as goalkeeper Rob Green, there is a good chance that the Whites would have lost the game.

Gary Monk’s men will be looking to cement their position in the Championship playoffs as they look to win promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
