Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for Sunderland ace Jermain Defoe during the summer.

With Sunderland rooted to last position on the Premier League standings and destined for relegation due to their poor form, Defoe is expected to leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

He will be looking to play for a Premier League team where he can gain regular game time in order to convince England manager Gareth Southgate to select him for the 2018 World Cup.

The 34-year-old has certainly proved that he still has what it takes to be an effective forward in the Premier League this season.

Despite the Black Cats being sluggish, he has notched 14 League goals, which earned him a recall to the England squad for the first time since 2013.

The Magpies will have to however compete with Defoe’s former club West Ham as well as Bournemouth for his services.
