In the UEFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Azerbaijan will host Germany at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium this Sunday, March 26, 2017 (9:00 AM Pacific). Both teams are in contention for a World Cup spot and need the three points from the game.
Azerbaijan has surprisingly done well in a contested Group C of this UEFA World Cup qualifying stage, currently in third place with seven points. The southeastern European team beat Norway and San Marino and drew 0-0 to the Czech Republic to accumulate these seven points. The team does have a young core with nine players 24-years-old or younger.
Among the more interesting players on Azerbaijan’s roster is 17-year-old, Renat Dadashov of Eintracht Frankfurt. The ‘milli’ should be able to compete in this game, but realistically should not be pulling off an upset against Germany.
Germany is coming from a midweek friendly against England, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Germans at home. The lone goal of the game was fittingly enough scored by Lukas Podolski, who was playing in his last international match for his country, marking the end of an era in German football.
Going into this match ‘Nationalelf’ are among one of the best teams in this competition, topping Group C with 12 points, undefeated with four wins. Even more impressively, in these four wins, Germany has outscored its opponents 16-0, not allowing a single goal.
Going into this game, Joachim Low will be without Manuel Neuer and could possibly also be without Mesut Ozil. Low will still have a very strong squad with a lot of young talent on the team. Some of the more intriguing players to look out for in the game could be the younger players like Julian Draxler and Leroy Sane, who have had great campaigns with their respective club teams. The match should be one that the 2014 World Cup champions win with ease and perhaps even prolong their impressive clean sheet streak in the competition.
