Former Newcastle United striker Les Ferdinand has claimed that the current Magpies side will not blow their Championship title hopes like how the squad of 21 years ago blew their Premier League title hopes.
According to Ferdinand the 1995/96 squad lost the Premier League title due to complacency. Ferdinand, who is a cousin of Rio Ferdinand, does not believe that the current team will do something similar to the squad led by Kevin Keegan 21 years ago as they squandered a 12 point lead in the Premiership and lost out on the title to Manchester United.
The 50-year-old said, “I think that most of the players would admit that we had a bit of complacency in there and that is probably what cost us. I think this Newcastle team will go up and win the title.”
With just eight games of the Championship remaining, Rafa Benitez’s men are seemingly destined for promotion, though they still face competition for the title from Brighton and Hove Albion, who are one point behind the Magpies.
