Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took the time to answer a few questions and to make a fair few headlines with comments about youngster Ben Woodburn in an interview with the Liverpool Echo.
Woodburn, just 17 years old, became the Reds’ youngest ever scorer with a goal in the EFL Cup against Leeds United. And it’s that and his composed play at that tender age that’s led to his call up from the Welsh senior side ahead of a massive clash with the Republic of Ireland this week.
Klopp said that Wales manager Chris Coleman had not called him about the 17 year old, before stating that he wasn’t sure what the etiquette was. The most interesting thing said, though, by the German was that “It’s a little bit like my situation. As long as you give me the time, as long as we give him the time, everything will be good.”
Development has to be priority number one here, and that’s what Klopp is trying to emphasize with him. Unlike other young players at the club, he’s clearly seen to have the potential to be something big.
But Klopp is obviously concerned that he will have that growth stunted if he and Coleman, or whomever the manager may be, are not on the same page together.
