Club legend claims that this player has replaced Steven Gerrard at Liverpool

Dietmar Hamann was there on the night Liverpool became perhaps the most unlikely European champions in history with a dramatic three goal come back in Istanbul. On that night, he saw Steven Gerrard inspire the Reds to ‘old big ears.’

But now he says that the Reds have managed to finally replace the legendary English midfielder. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, he said that Gini Wijnaldum had “been a brilliant buy and I think he’ll only get better,” while also saying “since Gerrard left, we lacked goals sometimes from midfield.”

Hamann might be jumping a little ahead of himself here, or he might be a bit misconstrued, but he right in a lot of ways. There was no way for a while in that sort of role. But of late, at least at home, the Dutchman has stepped up to fill some of the gap left by the former captain.

Still yet, it’s far too early to know if he will ever touch near the success of Stevie G. If he can take his scoring on the road with him, there’s no doubt that Liverpool would be much better off!
