In the quarterfinals of the Copa MX Monterrey will host Puebla at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer this Wednesday, March 15, 2017 (7:30 PM Pacific). Both teams had a solid group stage campaign in the Copa MX and should give a good match in this game.
Monterrey was the best team in the group stage play of the Copa MX, going undefeated with four wins, scoring 13 goals and only conceding one. Rogelio Funes Mori emerged as the top goalscorer for the ‘regios’ in the group stage play, scoring three goals. In the round of 16 of the Copa MX playoffs, the ‘rayados’ faced second division side, Mineros de Zacatecas and won comfortably 4-0.
Funes Mori was a key figure in the game scoring two out of the four goals, the other two coming from Nicolas Sanchez and Yimmi Chara. Antonio Mohamed has expressed interest in the competition, using most of his key players throughout the tournament. This should be another game that Monterrey does win, but Puebla can prove to be a challenge.
Puebla was not nearly as good as Monterrey in the group stages of the competition, being the ninth best team in the competition with seven points. Then in the round of 16, the ‘camoteros’ defeated Chiapas away from home by a score of 3-2. Jose Cardozo has not presented the same amount of interest to the Copa MX as Antonio Mohamed using an alternate lineup with many of the new signings who have not made it to the Liga MX starting lineup yet.
Some of these players include Osvaldo Centurion, Federico Gonzalez and Carlos Rodriguez. Another intriguing player Cardozo has used in this competition is Alvaro Navarro, who was a key figure in the Apertura 2016, but has not been the same this tournament. The Uruguayan forward was a key figure in the round of 16 match against Chiapas, scoring two goals in the game. The match should be a good one, even with Monterrey having a clear advantage, especially with the game being at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer.
