The Copa MX quarterfinal match between Xolos of Tijuana and Monarcas Morelia will be held this Tuesday, March 14, 2017 (8:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Caliente. The winner of this match will qualify into the semifinals to face the winner between Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul who play earlier in the day.
Xolos of Tijuana has performed well through the Copa MX where they won their group over Correcaminos and Sonora with 9 points after 3 wins and a loss. In the round-of-16 the team coached by Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera faced the always difficult Club America in a close match they were able to win 1-0.
That game ended in great controversy as America’s defender and ex-Xolo Pablo Aguilar slightly headbutted the ref which led to a referee protest that halted the Liga MX last weekend. If Tijuana wins on Tuesday, they will once again have home-field advantage during the semifinals as they are seeded higher than Santos and Cruz Azul.
Monarcas Morelia had a decent group stage in which they finished in 2nd place of Group 9 with 6 points; 6 less than first placed Leon. The team coached by interim Roberto Hernandez surprised many when they defeated Toluca during the round-of-16 in a game that reached penalty kicks. That game was also filled by controversy as three Toluca players were given a red-card including Enrique Triverio who shoved the ref. Along with Aguilar, these players were recently given a one-year ban from any competitions.
