The round of 16 in the Copa MX is now underway, Queretaro will host Juarez at the Estadio Corregidora this Tuesday, March 7 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). The game is a direct knockout match, with the winner of the game going to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Queretaro finished as the fifth best team in the Copa MX, in first place of group 2 of the tournament. The ‘gallos blancos’ have been a different team since Jaime Lozano has taken over as manager of the team, with only one defeat in five Liga MX matches. Queretaro has been a strong team in the Copa MX, with three victories and only one defeat, the defeat coming in week 5 against Cruz Azul, 3-0. The ‘gallos’ latest result in the competition was a nice 3-0 victory against second division side, Alebrijes de Oaxaca.
Queretaro counted for seven goals, by six different goalscorers, Emanuel Villa being the top goalscorer with two goals. Queretaro is of course, looking to defend the title as the team is the current-champions of the Copa MX. It will be interesting to see what players Jaime Lozano does end up using and how Queretaro will fare in this game coming from a tough 4-1 loss to Monterrey in the Liga MX.
Juarez is one of three second division sides who made it to the round of 16 in the Copa MX. The border city side is doing well in the contested Ascenso MX in 10th place with 17 points, only four points back of Sinaloa in first place. The Bravos did well in the Copa MX finishing in second place, in group 7 of the competition, with six points. Two victories against Dorados de Sinaloa ensured Juarez a ticket to the round of 16 in the tournament.
Manager, Miguel Fuentes had been utilizing some regular starters in the Copa MX, but not all, leaving out top goalscorer for the club, Leandro Carrijo. The Brazilian striker has been one of the top goalscorers of the Ascenso MX with five goals, but is yet to even start a game in the Copa MX. It will be interesting if Miguel Fuentes does play him or if he will save him for important second division games in the future.
