In one of the best match-ups of week 6 of the Copa Corona MX Santos Laguna will host Club America at the Estadio Corona this Wednesday, March 1, 2017 (6:30 PM Pacific). This is a must-win game for Santos Laguna if the team wishes to advance to the next stage of the competition.
The win would be huge for the ‘guerreros’ as it would catapult them to first place in group 3 past America, due to goal differential. Jose Manuel de la Torre’s side is undefeated in the Liga MX campaign after 8 matches, but has not been that fortunate in the Copa MX. Santos has one lone win in the competition coming in week 5 against Coras FC by a massive score line of 5-0. Before that game, Santos fell to both America and Coras in the competition.
‘El Chepo’ will most likely bring out his best players for this match like Nestor Araujo, Carlos Izquierdoz, Osvaldo Martinez, Jonathan Orozco and Jonathan Rodriguez. The first game between the two teams ended in a thrilling 3-2 game in week 1 at the Estadio Azteca, that Club America did win. Santos scored two goals via free kicks in the game, one by Ulises Davila and the other by Osvaldo Martinez, who should be a key player to watch in the game. Jose Manuel de la Torre did not bring out his best side in that match, but is unlikely he will do the same in this match with classification to the knockout stages on the line.
Club America is not guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, so they do need either a draw or a win to cement its position in the next round. The ‘aguilas’ are of course, in hard times right now in 11th place with 10 points in the Liga MX. Ricardo La Volpe is not looking like a mainstay with the club as he has led the team to many hard defeats this tournament.
One of those defeats was in the Copa MX, in week 3 of the tournament where America lost to second division side, Coras 3-2. Ricardo La Volpe has been using some of his best players for this competition and is likely to do the same for this match. Silvio Romero has been an important player for the Mexico City side in this tournament, getting three goals, but it is unclear if he will start in this game.
The first-time America faced Santos in the Copa MX, the three goalscorers for America in their 3-2 victory were Osmar Mares, Darwin Quintero and Silvio Romero. Club America will need to count with some of its best players to show up in this match to cement their place in the playoffs. The match should be a hard-fought encounter, characteristic of an important Liga MX match, with many great players involved.
