In week 6 of the Copa Corona MX Mineros de Zacatecas will host Atlas at the Estadio Francisco Villa this Wednesday, March 1, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). Zacatecas does not have much to play for in this game, already with no possibility of qualifying to the knockout stages of the competition with only two points in group 4 of the Copa MX.
The second division side, however is excelling in the Ascenso MX in second place with 19 points after 10 weeks of play. The Mineros achieved draws against Puebla and Atlas to get the two points they have now, but ultimately could not compete against the Liga MX sides. Ricardo Rayas is unlikely to use many key starters in the match like Jose Martinez, Noe Maya or Gustavo Ramirez.
This game could be used by the Mineros head coach to test some players that do not get much playing time. Zacatecas is on a good run in the Ascenso MX, having only lost one game in the competition after 10 weeks of play. The loss came in week 10 against Dorados de Sinaloa, 1-0. Ricardo Rayas is clearly more focused in trying to achieve promotion than in winning the Copa MX.
Atlas is currently in second place of group 4 of the competition with four points and could use the three points to qualify to the next round of the Copa MX. The ‘rojinegros’ could even take first place in the group if they can win by a goal margin of two or more. Jose Cruz has been leading Atlas to positive results in the Liga MX, currently in sixth place with 13 points, only three back of Tijuana in first.
The ‘zorros’ are coming off two straight victories in the Liga MX and is undefeated in two straight games in the Copa MX. The first time these two teams met, Zacatecas did put up a fight as the game ended in a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Jalisco. Jose Cruz has been utilizing plenty of youngsters in these Copa MX, but may use some of his regular starters in this game, due to the importance of it. The game should be good, Atlas has a lot to gain and Zacatecas has nothing to lose.
