Former Everton forward Alex Young has died aged 80. Young moved to the Toffees from Scottish club Hearts in 1960 in a transfer deal worth £40,000 and amassed 272 appearances for the Toffee’s, scoring 89 goals, winning the First Division as well as FA Cup along the way.
He also turned out eight times for the Scotland national team, notching five goals. During his playing days, Young’s killer instinct in front of goal earned him the nickname “the golden vision”.
Young’s son, Alex Junior told the Everton club website, “We are all very sad and will miss him terribly. He loved Everton, he loved being back at Goodison Park. He always said it was like going to church.”
Young was one of the greatest strikers of his generation. He is a Toffees legend and was fittingly awarded a testimonial by the club in 2001, which 20,000 people attended.
His name will be etched in the Everton record books forever and his passing away is certainly a very sad day for the famous club.
