The most noteworthy match during Week 8 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 will be when Club America hosts Cruz Azul for the Clasico Joven this Saturday, February 25, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Azteca. This Mexico City rivalry game could have been a much more exciting encounter, yet, both teams have struggled greatly during this season.
Club America has been nothing but terrible this season as they have only gathered 7 points after 2 wins, 1 tie, and 4 losses. The team coached by the always controversial Ricardo La Volpe has not won in three consecutive Liga MX matches, most recently losing against their arch-rival Chivas of Guadalajara last weekend during the Super Clasico. The ‘aguilas’ are in dire need for a win not only in order to defeat a big rival like Cruz Azul, but most importantly to begin earning more points in their quest for a playoff seed.
Cruz Azul is in a similar, but slightly worse situation than their Saturday opponent. The team coached by Spaniard Paco Jemez has had a very negative welcoming in Mexico as his team sits in a sad 16th place after 1 win, 3 ties, and 3 losses. The biggest issue for the ‘cementeros’ this season has been with ‘cruzazuzearla’ as they have consistently lost points in the last minutes of the game by being unable to hold on to their leads. This Saturday Cruz Azul must win in order to have any hope of reaching the playoffs while a loss will most likely leave Jemez on a very loose cord.
Historically, there have been 153 totl games of the ‘Clasico Joven’ in which America has won 50 times, Cruz Azul won 53, and 54 ties. In regular season games, America has 30 wins, Cruz Azul 33, and 39 ties.
