The Liga MX Clausura 2017 is starting to take shape as we approach week 8 of the competition. Queretaro will host Pumas UNAM to kick off Saturday’s play at the Estadio Corregidora this February 25, 2017 (3:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are fighting for a playoff spot in this Clausura, and it should be a solid match.
The ‘gallos blancos’ are a distinct team now under Jaime Lozano as the head coach of the organization. Queretaro has scored seven goals and has accumulated seven points in the three games since Jaime Lozano has taken over. The Mexican manager has made an immediate impact on the team getting the best out of the players that were already on the club.
A great example of this is Luis Miguel Noriega, who had been struggling at the beginning of the tournament, even getting a red card against Morelia in week 2 of the league. Now under Lozano the veteran midfielder has been the standout player on the team, becoming the top goal-scorer of the team with three goals. Scoring one goal in Queretaro’s last three games, against tough opponents in Cruz Azul, Leon and Necaxa. Another player that has really stepped up under Lozano has been Neri Cardozo. The Argentine midfielder has been the main play-maker for Queretaro in this tournament, providing four assists in only three games.
Of course, a key player who has been spectacular for the ‘gallos’ and can always be a game-changer is goal-keeper, Tiago Volpi. The Brazilian keeper is arguably the best at his position in this Clausura leading the league with 34 saves. This Queretaro team has abandoned its pragmatic play style it had under Vucetich and is now providing more excitement in their games, which should show in this game.
Pumas UNAM has been great in this tournament, although has suffered because of defensive miscues as of late. The Mexico City team has conceded five goals in its last two games, including three last week against Club Tijuana at home. The offense saved the team from defeat scoring three goals in 10 minutes against the Xoloitzcuintles. While the offense has been outstanding at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario scoring eight goals in the Clausura.
Away from home has been a completely different story, as the Pumas have only scored two goals away from the Olimpico Universitario. Nicolas Castillo has been one of the top goal-scorers of the league with four goals, including one last week against Tijuana. Pumas UNAM will have a tough game away from home against a tough opposition, and a tough goalkeeper in Tiago Volpi. This game should be an exciting encounter between two teams that are fighting for a playoff spot.
