On Saturday, February, 18, 2017 the ‘Super Clasico’, Chivas vs America, was broadcast in English for the first time, ever. It was not on ESPN or Fox Soccer Channel, or even on TV for that matter. The game was brought in the English language on Facebook Live, via Univision Deportes.
In this digital age, we live in streaming and watching things on online platforms is the way most people get entertainment. Univision has seen this as an opportunity to target new audiences to the Liga MX, by providing content in English on Facebook Live. No this is not the typical bland British style of broadcasting that characterizes the Premier League, it is also not like hearing a straightforward American style of broadcast like FS1 has provided.
This is a new unique style that incorporates two cultures (Latino and American) and makes it into one to present an exciting, witty broadcast that you can enjoy on your phone, if you wanted to. The main man behind the mic is the son of a man you may know, Mr. Andres Cantor. Nico has been doing a fantastic job brining English coverage of the Liga MX and has now received an opportunity to do what his dad does.
Nico did not disappoint and brought an uncharacteristic, “Goal!” Call that is usually not seen on English broadcast. Instead of “what a goal” we got the classic “gooooool” call that his father has done so many times in the past.
Ramses Sandoval and Guad Venegas were also entertaining providing color commentary and characteristic of Mexican broadcast even having a laugh about Pablo Aguilar’s ridiculous hair. After a successful ‘clasico’ now Univision will broadcast three games this weekend on Facebook Live, completely free, with no ads and no delay.
