Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand appeared on BT Sport’s Premier League Show on 11th February and said that he believed Jermain Defoe would leave Sunderland during last month’s transfer window.

Defoe finished off last season as Sunderland’s top scorer and despite a shambolic display from the Black Cats so far this season, he has once again proven to be one of the few bright sparks within the team.

The evergreen forward has found the net 14 times from 25 appearances this season which is especially impressive given that he is 34-years-old.

Ferdinand believed that the veteran would have left Sunderland due to frustration created from the lack of support he is receiving from team-mates.

The United legend also added that he thought the financial limitations of the Black Cats, who did not invest during the January transfer window, would have also frustrated Defoe. He said, “I thought Defoe would be off, because there’s no investment. He needs help, it’s as simple as that.”
