To finish off week 6 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 Santos Laguna will host Cruz Azul at the Estadio Corona this Sunday, February 12, 2017. (4:00 PM Pacific). Santos is undefeated this tournament, while Cruz Azul is in dire need of points from this game which should make for an enticing duel.
Santos Laguna is yet to taste defeat in this Clausura 2017 with two wins and three draws in five weeks under Jose Manuel De La Torre at the helm. ‘Chepo’ has done a fine job with the team building a strong starting 11 with experienced foreigners and young Mexican players. Among the younger players on the team, Walter Sandoval has perhaps been the most impressive with three assists. The ‘guerreros’ also have a strong attack with Jonathan Rodriguez netting two goals and Julio Furch, finally scoring for them last week against Chivas.
Another impressive component of this Santos team has been its center-back pairing of Nester Araujo and captain, Carlos Izquierdoz, who are deadly in set-pieces and going forward with three goals combined this tournament. Overall this Santos team is well-built and should be competitive going forward in this competition. Jose Manuel De La Torre will of course be absent from the bench in this game as he will be serving a suspension because of his suspension in last week’s game against Chivas.
Cruz Azul and Paco Jemez is a relationship that seems to be crumbling as the weeks pass as the Spanish manager has only achieved five points in this Clausura 2017. Jemez of course needs time to adapt to the play of the Liga MX, but fans and the organization who has suffered for so long, has anything but time. Cruz Azul does possess a strong roster, and it has played exceptional under the Spaniard at the helm, but the most important thing, the results have not come for ‘la maquina’.
One of the most impressive players for the ‘celestes’ this tournament has been Gabriel Penalba, the Argentine midfielder has really controlled the midfield well for this Cruz Azul team. His 88.6-percent passing accuracy leads the team and is good enough for fourth in all the Liga MX. Martin Cauteruccio is also a key player who could potentially make a difference if he gets more playing time. The Uruguayan striker only has received 151 minutes of playing time, but it will be interesting to see if he can be a factor in this game. The match should be a solid matchup with Cruz Azul and Paco Jemez, desperately needing the three points.
