Chiapas will host Club America at the Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna this Tuesday, February 7, 2017 (6:00 PM Pacific) for a pending game from week 1 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017. Both teams need to desperately sum up points going forward in the competition which will make for a hard-fought and exciting encounter.
Chiapas is coming from a tough 2-0 loss to Veracruz, which has heavily influenced the relegation battle in the Liga MX. This pending game is crucial to the ‘jaguares’ season, as it could put them behind Veracruz on the relegation table if they are unable to come away with points from the game. Chiapas has come away with huge upsets in this Clausura 2017; it managed to beat both Toluca and Tigres by a score of 1-0. Sergio Bueno’s side will come into the game as underdogs as they have in nearly all their encounters of 2017.
Many unlikely heroes have emerged within this organization like Jonathan Fabbro, Luis Angel Mendoza and captain, Felix Araujo. The most interesting thing to see in the match will be goalkeeper, Moises Munoz coming up against his former team. Munoz was unhappy by the way Club America did let him go and so far, he has been spectacular for this ‘jaguares’ side.
Club America has only managed to beat relegation candidates this tournament in Veracruz and Monarcas Morelia, falling to league contenders in Toluca and Tigres in its other encounters. Ricardo La Volpe currently finds himself in the hot seat as well, coming from an embarrassing 3-2 loss to Coras Tepic in Copa Corona MX play last week. The ‘aguilas’ are clearly an unstable franchise without that leadership presence that Rubens Sambueza brought to the team. Young players like new signing, Cecilio Dominguez and Edson Alvarez have been stepping up for the Mexico City side as of late.
But there does seem to be something missing to make this Club America side that imposing force that they were in the Apertura 2016 tournament. This will be an important match in La Volpe’s return to ‘la selva’ as it could be his last match as the Club America head coach if he is to fall to Sergio Bueno and Chiapas.
