The LFP, Spain’s national league association, released a statement on Saturday confirming that the Celta de Vigo versus Real Madrid match to be held on Sunday, February 5th, will be postponed.
At the time of writing, there is no official date set for the match. This is the biggest headache for the LFP since the new date depends on how both teams perform in Europe.
Should Celta go far in the Europa League and/or if Real Madrid does the same in the UEFA Champions League, the teams would have to create a date between the last two La Liga matchdays in May.
La Liga made the decision after the municipality of Vigo released a special announcement about the poor state of the Balaídos Stadium, Celta de Vigo’s home ground.
The poor condition of the bleachers is a safety hazard for any person attending the match. The city is currently going through a very windy climate that could worsen this issue and is keeping them from fixing it.
This isn’t the first time Los Blancos have had to postpone a match because of external reasons. A clash against Rayo Vallecano in 2012 was the most recent one. The 2004 mini-game versus Real Sociedad is one of the most notable.
Oddly enough, Real Madrid will retain the top spot in the league table despite having two pending matches. The last time they had two postponed matches was in the 1999-2000 campaign.
