Recently acquired New Zealand international Sam Brotherton is ready for a “serious job” at his new club, Sunderland. The player was announced as Sunderland’s latest signing and will join Sunderland’s under-23 team, who have had a decent season in contrast to the senior team, languishing in the relegation zone of the Premier League.
Brotherton said, “You just see the importance of football to the lives of these people, it really affects their emotions and that just shows you how serious it is and that’s how serious your job is.”
He will most definitely not play a role in Sunderland’s relegation dogfight in the Premier League, however if the 20-year-old impresses while on duty for the Sunderland under 23’s, he may gain a role in the first team in the near future.
Brotherton has been capped six times by the New Zealand national team and his contract will run until the end of the 2018-19 season.
Brotherton made a name for himself during the Oceania Cup of Nations for New Zealand in May and June last year, which the All Whites won. He was given opportunities for the national team due to an injury crises and will likely be called up to the New Zealand squad that will play in the Confederations Cup later this year.
