Tim Krul of Newcastle United as joined Dutch club AZ Alkmaar on loan until the end of the season. The goalkeeper had been linked with a move to Premier League club Watford before joining AZ.
After being hampered by injury and missing the 2015-16 season, Krul went on loan to Ajax Amsterdam at the beginning of the season in a bid to regain first team football. However, he was unable to dislodge Andre Onana from the starting position at Ajax and decided to leave during this transfer window to start playing again.
Choosing AZ was a good move for Krul. He desperately needs game time to re-establish himself. A move to Watford would have not guaranteed him game time either as Heurelho Gomes has been in fine form for the club.
The 28-year-old signed a one year contract extension with Newcastle last summer and is expected to return at the end of the season to compete with Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Rob Eliott for the starting position at Newcastle.
