After reporting yesterday that Liverpool were in talks to extend Philippe Coutinho’s deal, and up the money he will earn, the two parties moved very quickly to tie up the deal. Liverpool’s #10 has put pen to paper on a deal that the club states is a “long-term contract.”
This deal, coming from the club, sounds as if it hasn’t really extended the length of time that was on his original deal. That deal was to run until 2020. Maybe this one extends it a year, but the main focus of this is probably his earnings.
Liverpool did not want to take a chance of seeing his time run down to the point where they were forced to sell because he was unhappy. This deal, like it or not, is just a way to protect the club.
There is nothing more here. It likely includes a larger buyout clause as well, so that Liverpool won’t lose him for next to nothing. So, yes be excited, but don’t get overly optimistic that this magical Brazilian is going to always be at Anfield!
