Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is still hopeful of signing Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney. The Chronicle claims that the Magpies haven’t accepted defeat in their pursuit of the star midfielder despite being quoted a fee of £20million by the Cottagers earlier this month.
The Cottagers are well aware of the interest in their star player and aim to do everything in their power to keep him at the club.
Recently, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic revealed that the London club are prepared to offer the 25-year-old a new deal to keep him happy at the club.
The Fulham boss said: “I’m not talking about speculation. He’s had a very good year, and I believe it’s normal that other clubs are interested in him. We need to understand this situation.
“I believe Tom Cairney is our key player and we need to do something about this. He deserves some benefit from Fulham’s side, and we’re going to do this.
“Generally, we’re talking about a new contract and more money. This is what I want. For myself, this is sense.
“If you don’t start talking with this man we have to interpret and understand the situation. It’s normal for Fulham and all the players.”
Cairney has been ever-present in Fulham’s midfield this season and has contributed with five goals and three assists in 24 league appearances.
Championship side Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the player, but, the Magpies currently hold an edge in the pursuit as they would provide a much safer route to Premier League football to the player.
