Good News For Celtic Fans, Historic Record Intact

Celtic haven’t completed a great signing today.  They haven’t sold anyone.  They haven’t even won a match.  But they have remained in the record books.  That’s right.  Celtic are still on top of the European game in one regard.

And well on top, as well.  Celtic, back 100 years ago, in the 1917 season went undefeated for 62 matches in a row.  That record was being threatened by a rampant Real Madrid side- until yesterday.

Real Madrid had just come off a dramatic 3-3 draw with Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, but they ran out of gas late against the side from Seville in a league rematch on Sunday.

Madrid, leading 1-0 after a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in the 67th minute, capitulated by giving up two goals after the 85 minute mark.  The first was an own goal by Varane, the second a winner from forgotten man Stevan Jovetic.

Celtic can rest with the knowledge of knowing their record is intact now, but this was a very impressive run.  To go 40 matches unbeaten in this era is remarkable, and this should be remembered as one of the best runs in the history of football.
