West Ham are desperate to sign a striker in the January transfer window, and that’s very much evident from the latest transfer news in football media.

Recent reports have suggested that the Hammers are interested in Brentford striker Scott Hogan, and, now, Daily Mirror has claimed that Sunderland have turned down an approach from the East London club for their star striker, Jermaine Defoe.

The report claimed that the Hammers made an official approach to sign the 34-year-old and offered £5m for his services.

However, their approach was immediately rebuffed by the Black Cats, who remain embroiled in the relegation battle.

It remains to be seen whether the Hammers will return with an improved bid for the former England international.

Defoe has scored 11 goals for the Black Cats this season. He is arguably the Black Cats’ best chance of surviving relegation this season, and it would take extraordinary circumstances for manager David Moyes to let go of his best player.
