Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has earned his first senior Spain call-up for the Iberians’ World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Albania.
Spain manager Julen Lopetegui has decided to give Herrera a chance to show what he’s capable of after Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez was forced to withdraw with injury.
Herrera is unlikely to start for Spain, but his presence will be crucial as Thiago Alcantara and Saul Niguez are both carrying slight injuries, which puts a question mark over their participation.
The 27-year-old former Athletic Bilbao midfielder has been rewarded for his impressive displays for United in the last few weeks, during which he cemented his place in Mourinho’s starting eleven at the expense of Marouane Fellaini.

Spain could definitely do with Herrera’s energy and determination in midfield and the player’s fantastic attitude could also help him establish himself in Lopetegui’s long-term plans.
Herrera definitely deserves his chance to prove himself in his national team and there’s still plenty of time to earn many more call-ups if he continues to perform.
