Liverpool’s League Cup journey continues with a visit to Pride Park Stadium where Derby County waits. Despite sending out a strong squad in the last round against Burton, Jurgen Klopp might decide to use this match to show off the depth of the Reds’ squad. There are also a few young players who may get a chance to impress the manager.
Goalkeeper
Loris Karius may finally make his season debut in this match. He has been on the bench for the last two matches but this would be the perfect tune-up for the young German. It’s as good a time as any to show everyone what he is capable of.
Right-Back
Either one of Trent Alexander-Arnold or Connor Randall will likely play but the former might be the better option. He played in the role in the U23s match against Leicester and has looked like a solid player whenever he has been given a chance.
Center-Backs
Mamadou Sakho may still not be ready to play in Klopp’s mind. If he remains out of the lineup, Ragnar Klavan and Lucas Leiva will be tasked with helping the club get it’s second clean sheet in the competition.
Left-Back
Alberto Moreno will see this match as a chance to work his way back into claiming his spot in the first team. The Spaniard should have full reign over his flank given the quality of the opponent.
Midfield
A less exciting but solid midfield of Emre Can, Kevin Stewart and Marko Grujic could be in the mix for Tuesday’s match. Can is still working his back from an injury and both Stewart and Grujic remain young players who can only improve. While they might not be the most creative players, their physicality should allow them to dominate the middle of the pitch.
Right Wing
Divock Origi almost scored against Chelsea but he showed that he remains a threat to score whenever he takes the field. A good performance in this match could give Klopp more to think about when selecting his strongest lineup.
Forward
Danny Ings has been playing with the U23s to remain sharp. He could lead the line in this match and make his case to make more appearances in the Premier League with a goal or two.
Left Wing
Ben Woodburn is the most exciting young player the club has. At only 16-years-old, he already plays with the U23s and he would have gone to America as part of the pre-season tour if he didn’t have school to go to. A fantastic talent to watch, getting some top-level experience can only help his development.
