Report: Jorge Mendes wants to take Brazilian defender to Old Trafford

Manchester United and Napoli are competing for the signature of versatile Monaco defender Fabinho, according to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The respected journalist suggests Italian side Napoli are interested in Fabinho, but they’re unlikely to sign him as his agent, Jorge Mendes, wants to take the player to Manchester United this summer.

Napoli are believed to be ready to switch their attentions towards Udinese full-back Silvan Widmer, making Fabinho’s transfer to Manchester United the most likely conclusion.

Mendes’ reported intentions are not exactly surprising as he also represents Jose Mourinho, who took charge of Manchester United last month.

Fabinho, who can play at right-back and in midfield, scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists in 47 appearances for Monaco last season.

Given Matteo Darmian’s unconvincing displays last season, signing the 22-year-old Brazilian would be a very good move.

His versatility would come in handy as well. Mourinho has never hidden his admiration for quality players, who can play in more than one position.

It appears as though Fabinho is set to move away from Monaco this summer and if United are really interested in him, they shouldn’t have much difficulty in securing his services.
