Report: Manchester United striker could be set for the Championship

Old Trafford

Championship newcomers Barnsley have made a bid to bring Ashley Fletcher back to Oakwell, according to the Sheffield Star.

The report suggests Barnsley are keen to secure Fletcher’s services for another year after the 20-year-old striker impressed at Oakwell last season, scoring 9 goals and making 4 assists as the club sealed a promotion to the Championship.

Barnsley are likely to face competition for the striker as Leeds United are also believed to be interested in signing him, either on loan or permanently.

However, Fletcher has been offered a new contract by Manchester United, so a permanent exit seems highly unlikely.

He’s a promising player and a loan move to the Championship would be good for him as it’d allow him to continue his development and make the step upto Championship football.

Returning to Barnsley for another loan spell would be the best possible decision.  He’s already used to Paul Heckingbottom’s tactics, is familiar with the surroundings and is also highly valued by the club after his heroics last season.

Barnsley’s main goal next season will be to keep their Championship place and considering the fact Fletcher has already made a name for himself at Oakwell, he’d probably remain a key player inHeckingbottom’s team if the deal goes through.
