Manchester United goalkeeper reportedly set to stay

De Gea

David De Gea will stay at Manchester United this summer due to Zinedine Zidane’s desire to stick with Keylor Navas, according to Spanish paper Marca.

The report claims Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is an admirer of De Gea, but has agreed to respect Zidane’s decision to keep Navas as the team’s first choice goalkeeper next season.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in the last couple of years and was extremely close to signing for the 11-time European champions last summer, but the deal fell through in the last minutes of the transfer window.

Van Gaal dropped De Gea for the first 6 games of the 2015/16 season, but the Spaniard ended up staying at United and signed a new long-term deal shortly afterwards.

However, De Gea’s new deal hasn’t put a stop to the speculation about his future as there’s reportedly a €50m release clause in his contract.

25-year-old De Gea, who was voted Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the third consecutive season last month, played 49 games for United last season, in which he kept 19 clean sheets.

Keeping De Gea at the club would be a massive boost for Mourinho’s future plans. The Portuguese manager would be able to concentrate on his transfer targets instead of worrying about losing one of his best players.
