Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen United’s midfield with the signing of Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The paper’s report suggests Mourinho has prioritized the signing of a striker, a right winger, a central midfielder and a centre-back this summer, as he tries to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the league title.
26-year-old Pjanic, who scored 12 goals and made 13 assists in 41 appearances for Roma last season, is contracted to the Italian club until 2018 and has also been linked with many other big clubs over the last few weeks, such as Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea and Juventus.
Mourinho is believed to have instructed the club to clinch the signings as early as possible. Getting the new players in early is extremely important for any ambitious team.
Chelsea managed to sign Fabregas, Matic and Diego Costa before the start of the World Cup 2 years ago and they went on to win the league convincingly. It’s far from a guarantee for success, but it drastically improves the chances of challenging for honours.
Pjanic is certainly a realistic target and would be a great signing for United. He’d add some much needed creativity to the team’s midfield and is also a prolific set-piece specialist.
