Reports: United closing in on first summer transfer deal for around £46.6million

Old Trafford

Manchester United are set to announce their first summer transfer deal totalling £46.6m over four years for Benfica star midfielder Renato Sanches, according to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The unconfirmed reports suggest that United have a solid understanding with the Portuguese side on the sum and time frame, though no money has been delivered so far as the transfer window officially opens on July 1st.

Sanches, an eighteen year-old midfielder and Portuguese national, is said to be a target for a number of big European clubs, and a deal with United would see his club earn £11.6m per year for the next four seasons from the sale. The promising young player was part of Benfica’s B squad in 2014 and moved up to the A squad at the beginning of this season, scoring 2 goals in 18 appearances.

According to the British news source the Daily Star, “United’s scouts have been in attendance at almost every Benfica match this season and Sir Alex Ferguson is said to have given the thumbs up to the deal.”

Should the deal go ahead, it’s likely that Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho will take over from Louis Van Gaal, as he and Sanches share the same agent.
